Advanced Placement (AP) Courses

Advanced Placement is a program of college-level courses and exams that give high school students the opportunity to receive advanced placement and/or credit in college. Advanced Placement courses are taught by GHS staff and are weighted 1 extra grade point. In May, the student has the option to take the Advanced Placement test in that subject area. Note: Students may also take the AP exam without taking the related GHS AP course. More information on AP Courses can be found here.

Dual Credit Options

Early College Credit Program
High school students in grades 9 through 12 can take classes at a four-year college through the Early College Credit Program (ECCP). Students may earn college and high school credit through the program. Under ECCP, the costs of the courses are shared among the Institute of Higher Education (IHE), the school district or private school, the state, and in some cases the student’s family.

The Board of Education will limit the credits for which the district will pay at institutions of higher education under the ECCP to 18 credits per student.

Applications to take courses already offered at Grafton High School will be not approved.

If a student received a failing grade or fails to complete an ECCP course, the student/family will be responsible for reimbursing the district.

Transportation is the responsibility of the parent/guardian and student. State reimbursement may be available through direct application by the parent/guardian or student to the Department of Public Instruction.

Grafton School District Application Deadlines:
Fall Semester - Applications must be submitted by March 1
Spring Semester - Applications must be submitted by October 1

Start College Now
High school students in grades 11 through 12 can take classes at Wisconsin’s technical colleges through the Start College Now (SCN) program. Students may earn college and high school credit through the program. Under SCN, the costs of the courses are shared among the IHE, the school district or private school, the state, and in some cases the student’s family. The Board of Education will limit the credits for which the district will pay at institutions of higher education under the SCN program to 18 credits per student.

Applications to take courses already offered at Grafton High School will not be approved.

If a pupil receives a failing grade or fails to complete an SCN course, the student/family will be responsible for reimbursing the district. If the student/family fails to provide reimbursement for the dropped or failed courses(s) the student will no longer be eligible for participation in the Start College Now program.

Transportation is the responsibility of the parent/guardian and student. State reimbursement may be available through direct application by the parent/guardian or student to the Department of Public Instruction.

Other Dual Enrollment Opportunities

CAPP Course
CAPP (COOPERATIVE • ACADEMIC • PARTNERSHIP • PROGRAM) Enrolling in a  University of Wisconsin Oshkosh CAPP course is a convenient and affordable way for high school students to earn concurrent high school and college credit, while developing key skills for future success. Click here for a list of frequently asked questions and their answers.

Technical College Courses through Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC)
Students at Grafton High School can earn credit toward their high school diploma and credit for college through articulation agreements the district has with MATC. These courses help students save both time and tuition costs. Transcripted credit (TC) allows students to earn the same grade they earn in the high school course in the college course. Advanced standing agreements allow students to bypass entry level course-work that has already been completed in high school. Credit for Prior Learning is offered to students who pass a proficiency exam, demonstration, or portfolio evaluation upon enrollment at MATC.

Dual Enrollment through University of Wisconsin-Green Bay
Spanish    
The University of WI - Green Bay and Grafton High School have partnered up to offer students the option of earning UW credit while still in high school. To be eligible for this program, students must enter Spanish 2 as freshmen. The prerequisite is three years of high school Spanish. Students will need to take both AP Spanish and the last cultural studies Spanish course in their senior year. Students will also sign up for Spanish 202 through UW-Green Bay. If students earn an average of B or better, they will earn 3 credits for the UW-Green Bay Spanish 202 course and 11 retroactive credits. Questions about the program can be addressed to your Spanish teacher and/or school counselor.
German    Students sign up for German 5 their senior year and German 202 through UW-Green Bay. If students earn an average of B or better, they will earn 3 credits for the UW-Green Bay German 202 course and 11 retroactive credits. UW-Green Bay determines the tuition in August. Questions about the program can be addressed to your German teacher and/or school counselor.

Advanced Placement (AP) Courses
AP Courses are available to students interested in taking college level courses while enrolled in high school. Students who participate in Advanced Placement courses should have superior grades in prerequisite courses, interest level in the subject, a high degree of self-motivation, and the ability to learn independently. After completing the course, students can elect to take an advanced placement exam and earn college credit based on his/her score. Project Lead The Way (PLTW)
Transcripted credits are available to students from a variety of PLTW affiliated universities throughout the United States. Most universities require a grade of B or better as well as a proficient score on the end of course exam. The exact requirements for the score on the end of course exam vary by university. Check with individual colleges and universities for information on recognition opportunities they offer to PLTW students. PLTW courses qualify as part of the PLTW/AP Recognition Award Program.

Part Time Open Enrollment
High school students in grades 9 through 12 may attend public school in a nonresident school district for the purpose of taking a course offered by the nonresident school district through the Part Time Open Enrollment Program.

  • A student may attend no more than 2 courses at any time in nonresident school districts.
  • Under Part-Time Open Enrollment, the costs of courses are paid by the resident school district. The parent is responsible for transporting the pupil to and from the course in the nonresident school district. The parent may apply to the Department of Public Instruction for a prorated reimbursement of the actual transportation costs.

GSD Application Deadlines:
No later than six weeks before the scheduled start of the course.

The nonresident school district may deny a pupil’s application only for the following reasons:

  • Space is not available in the course.
  • The pupil is not in the high school grades.
  • The pupil does not meet the nonresident school district’s criteria for being admitted to the course

The resident school district may deny a pupil’s application only for the following reasons:

  • The cost of the course creates an undue financial burden on the resident school district.
  • The course conflicts with the individualized education program (IEP) for a pupil who needs special education.
