In addition to our own internal process of evaluating learning based on the report card standards, our district also utilizes a standardized assessment called i-Ready. Throughout the year, your child will take the i-Ready reading and math assessments to measure their progress in fall, winter, and spring in relation to state standards in reading and math. Following the completion of these assessment windows, the results will be uploaded into Skyward Family Access under the "Report Card/Assessments" tab.
These detailed reports will show your child’s progress and growth throughout the school year and level of advancement within grade level standard. Additionally, the reports will outline your child’s performance on individual domains in the context of “grade level” understanding and placement. The family report will provide you with a reading Lexile Score, suggestions for next steps, as well as a growth comparison to your child’s fall score.
Please know that i-Ready is just one assessment measure, specific to one given day. Our teachers use multiple assessments and measures to determine your child’s understanding of grade level standards. So while the i-Ready assessment may say “needs improvement,” the report card may reflect “secure” or “developing.” The opposite can also be true. i-Ready assesses the Standards across the grade level.
Please work with your child’s teacher to discuss any questions you might have on your child’s diagnostic results. You can also learn more about i-Ready and ways you can interact with the data to help your child at the i-Ready Family Center.
i-Ready at the Elementary Level
In addition to being our local standarized assessment to measure your child’s growth, i-Ready also serves as our early dyslexia screening tool. Within the assessment students are assessed in the following domains for reading:
- Phonological Awareness
- Phonics
- High-Frequency Words
- Vocabulary
- Comprehension: Overall
- Literature
- Informational Text
The first three items are identified as “Foundational Items” and are not tested at upper grade levels if a base level score is attained, so one important clarification is that “Max Score” and “Tested Out” mean the following:
- Max Score - The student saw items in this domain on the test and attained a score in the maximum possible range within this grade level
- Tested Out - The student did not see items in this domain due to performance above a certain threshold in related domains or due to the student’s chronological grade level. *This could be classified as “Not Tested” as well as “Tested Out”
i-Ready at Middle School Level
In addition to using i-Ready as a diagnostic tool it is also used as a personalized learning tool for instructional purposes in reading and math for all John Long Middle School students. i-Ready instruction provides students with lessons based on their individual skill level and needs, so your student can learn at a pace that is just right for them.
