Attendance Policy
Note: A child may not be excused from school attendance for more than 10 days in a school year.*
Parents may write a note affirming these reasons for an absence (will count towards the 10 days):
- Illness
- Medical
- Family emergency
- Religious holidays or instruction (limited by law)
- School sponsored or recommended activities
- Family vacations or trips
- Activities that have a direct relationship to the school curriculum
- College visitation for second semester high school juniors and seniors (2 days)
Students are responsible for the work they will miss while absent from school. All tests and assignments missed during the absence must be made up within a reasonable mutually agreeable time after the student returns to class.
*Exception: Medical Excused Absences
Students may have “medical professional excused absences” with appropriate written documentation. These may include appointments, surgery, treatment, injury, or illness. These absences will not be counted toward the 10 day limit on parent excused absences. High numbers of medical professional approved absences may require that a health plan be developed to ensure the student’s needs are being met. An excuse under this paragraph shall be in writing and shall state the time period for which it is valid, not to exceed 30 days.
Board policy defines a medical professional as a licensed physician, dentist, chiropractor, optometrist, psychologist, or Christian Science practitioner who is living or residing in this state and who is listed in the Christian journal.
Unexcused absences will be treated as follows:
By statute 118.16(1) (a) (b) and (c), a student is designated as a “habitual truant” if they are absent from school without an acceptable excuse for part or all of 5 or more days on which school is held during a school semester. A child may not be excused for more than 10 days in a school year. (WI Stat. 118.15(3)(c)). Students who exceed this amount may be cited or referred to the Ozaukee County Dept. of Social Services. Parents should contact the school office with any concerns regarding school attendance.
