SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference
Congratulations to Chris Cheek, 2008 GHS graduate, who earned the 3rd place bronze medal in auto service technology at the SkillsUSA national leadership & skills conference in Kansas City. The competition involved one automotive service technology student from each state working on a wide variety of work station tasks that tested proficiency on Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) tasks across multiple manufacturers' products. Cheek proved his skills in the areas of Brakes, Air Conditioning, Electrical & Electronics, Suspension, Steering, Alignment, Major Engine Repair, Engine Performance and Transmissions. Ford / AAA Auto Competition - June 24
Congratulations to Paul Bretl and Chris Cheek both 2008 GHS graduates who today won the Ford AAA automotive competition in Detroit. Under the direction of Mr. Carl Hader, the Black Hawks bested teams from around the nation to earn first place honors. This competition is based on a written and a practical test. You may remember that Grafton High School had the six highest written scores in Wisconsin.

State Track Meet
Boys 4 x 400 Relay Team finishes 7th at WIAA State Track & Field Meet (Nick Taylor, Matt Solverson, Brandon Smart and Brad Betts).


Stock Market Simulation
For the past 10 weeks in the Personal Finance class at GHS, students have been participating in a Stock Market Simulation sponsored by Economics Wisconsin. This simulation involved over 150 high school groups throughout the state. Tom Bertling, Liz Fredrickson, and Brandon Wimmer placed 8th in State against all the other high school teams. The team will receive a check for $85 at a banquet on June 4 recognizing the top 20 winning teams. This is a great accomplishment.


Lions Club Citizenship Award Winners
Our local Lions Club has honored four of our students for their service to the school and community: Seniors Eileen Bennett, Jamie Korowlewski, and Jessica Wegner. Congratulations winners and thank you to the Lions Club for taking the time to recognize our students.



State of Wisconsin All-Star Softball Team
Congratulations Nicole Brandenburg – Nicole was named to the State of Wisconsin All-Star Softball Team. She will pitch for this team June 9-10 in Stevens Point.



Job Olympics at Concordia University
Congratulations – Job Olympians - On Wednesday, March 19 students from Grafton High School participated in the 4th Annual Job Olympics at Concordia University. They had the opportunity to demonstrate their skills in a variety of job categories. Congratulations to Cody Bublitz, Gabby DeStefano, Katie Helm and medal winners Ty Bajurny, Nick Bartel, Peter Grams and Nick Keefe. A special thank you to student volunteers Joe Grams and Zach Keefe.



DECA State Convention
Congratulations Rebecca King
– Becca was elected Vice-President of Business Partnerships (one of 7 officers to lead 15,000 Wisconsin members) at the DECA State Convention. Becca is the first Grafton High School student elected to state office since our DECA club was formed three years ago.


Girls Basketball Honors
Congratulations Rachael Hencke – Rachael has been named Miss Basketball for the state of Wisconsin, the Gatorade Player of the Year for Wisconsin, and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Player of the Area.

    Wisconsin Youth Leadership Forum
    Please congratulate Keifer Shutic Blaine on being selected as one of 30 students from across the state of Wisconsin to attend the 8th Annual Wisconsin Youth Leadership Forum at Edgewood College in Madison June 22 - 27, 2008. This will be a week-long leadership training and career awareness program for high school sophomores - seniors with disabilities. It will provide him with training in leadership, self-advocacy skills, and career awareness.

    SkillsUSA
    Our "Auto Hawks"...SkillsUSA automotive service technology competitors brought home an unprecedented Gold, Silver, and Bronze finish from the State Finals held at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison on April 9. Chris Cheek, Paul Bretl, and Nick Prom (respectively) all turned in strong individual efforts displaying the depth of our programs here at GHS and across our District. Brett Moegenburg came away with a Bronze in Cabinetmaking! Chris will be the Wisconsin competitor at the National Finals in Kansas City on June 23-27.


    3rd Place in National Competition
    The Grafton High School Automotive Team of seniors Paul Bretl, Chris Cheek and their Instructor, Carl Hader, traveled to New York City to compete in the 2008 Greater New York Auto Dealers Association National Auto Competition on March 26th & 27th.
    Sponsored locally by the Automobile Dealers Association of Mega Milwaukee (ADAMM) and David Hobbs Honda, they recieved third place after competing against 36 other teams in a two-day competition.

    7th Grade Destination Imagination
    Congratulations to the 7th grade team at JLMS who won first place in their challenge, Chorific, at the regional DI tournament on March 15. The team members are Rob Fugate, Kasia Belanger, Sarah Boehm, Brady Palubiski, Rachel Burczyk, Courtney Bernd, and Elisabeth Calderon. They will be advancing to the Wisconsin State Tournament at UW Stevens Point on April 19.


    2008 Kohl Excellence Scholar
    Congratulations to GHS senior, Lauren Moroder, who was named a 2008 Kohl Excellence Scholar. Lauren was chosen for her exceptional scholarship, leadership, citizenship, and school and community involvement. She will be honored by Senator Kohl at a reception on March 29 and will receive a $1000 scholarship.


    Where In Wisconsin is Jessica Doyle
    Octavia Williams (GES Fourth Grader) was selected as a weekly winner in the Where in Wisconsin is Jessica Doyle contest. Weekly contestants are given clues to Mrs. Doyles location and must e-mail her correct location to the Governor's Office. Mrs. Doyle will be visiting Octavia at Grafton Elementary School at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 6th.


    Family, Careers, Community Leaders of America (FCCLA)
    Maddy Studelska and Kaila Binsfeld will be going to the state competition in April. They received gold medals for the Chapter Showcase event.


    Delta Kappa Gamma's Literary Contest
    Congratulations to Katie Fischer for taking second place in the Grade 5 division. Katie will be honored at a ceremony at the Cedarburg Cultural Center on Tuesday, March 11th.


    ADAMM Technicians of Tomorrow Competition
    Congratulations to seniors Paul Bretl & Chris Cheek. WCTC they won the State finals of the 2008 ADAMM Technicians of Tomorrow Competition. Their efforts earn them $2500 in Technical College Tuition scholarship offers and Snap-on Tools valued at $2600. They also win the all-expense paid trip to New York over Easter break to represent Wisconsin as Team Honda in the National Competition. Our national winning team from 2006, Ryan Cummings (mechanical engineering-automotive) and Scott Tonelli (chemical engineering-alternative fuels) will be awarded their 2008 Chevrolet Cobalts March 26th this year in Manhattan at the Competition Banquet. Chris and Paul had to pass a rigorous, state-wide written test just to qualify for yesterday's event. Chris posted the high score in the state. Yesterday they competed against the other top five teams in a written test, five technician-caliber workstations, and a one-hour session with a "bugged" Chevrolet Cobalt which before they fully repaired it had no-start issues, air conditioning issues, lighting issues, tire pressure monitoring system problems, and a host of problems associated with the Check Engine Light, the electronic engine controls, and the numerous computer modules on the cars' controller area network.


    Cheerleading
    Congratulations to the GHS Competition Cheerleaders, as they captured their 4th consecutive State Championship, with their performance on Saturday in Green Bay!


    WIAA Division 2 State Swim Meet
    Congratulations to Lucas Ebert and Ben Kultgen, who both qualified for the in the 100 Breaststroke. The meet will be held in Madison this Friday, February 15th.


    Commended Scholars
    Colleen Jurkiewicz
    and Sean Lundquist were named Commended Scholars by the Nation Merit Scholarship Board for their scores on the PSAT test. Each scored in the top 3.5% of the 1.4 million students who took the exam last October.


    National AP Scholar
    Alex Gorzalski, a 2007 graduate, was named a National AP Scholar by the College Board. National AP Scholars earn an average of 4 or higher on all AP exams and score at least a 4 on eight exams. Congratulations to Alex for earning this prestigious award.


    AP Scholars
    The following 33 students and graduates were awarded honors by the College Board for their performance on AP tests through May of 2007. AP Scholars are students who receive a grade of 3 or higher on 3 or more AP exams. AP Scholars with Honor are students who average 3.25 on all AP exams and at least a 3 on 4 exams. AP Scholar with Distinction is granted to students who average 3.5 on all exams and at least 3 on 5 exams. In all 33 students were honored by the College Board. Current students who take more AP exams this year will be eligible for awards bases on exams taken throughout high school. The following students and graduates have been named AP Scholars:

    Lions Citizenship Award Winners
    Congratulations to Andrew Jarratt, Lauren Moroder, and Nicholas Prom, who were honored by the Grafton Lions Club for their character, citizenship and service to school and community.     National Merit Scholar
    Congratulation Babacar Ndoye! Babacar was named a Finalist in National Merit Scholarships National Achievement Scholarship Program. Babacar is one of 1300 students nation-wide to receive this award and is eligible for one of 800 Achievement Scholarships. Congratulations Babacar and good luck.


    Congratulations Tech Ed Department
    Congratulations to Carl Hader, Mike Dodge and Kevin Gain as the Tech Ed department received a $2000 grant from MATC. The Grafton High School project will fund industry standards and career cluster research in the areas of Construction, Welding, and Automotive Service Technology. This research will lead to the revision of curriculum to reflect occupational currency and incorporate a strong career component supportive of the career pathway approach.


    Art Award Winners
    Five of our students received state level recognition for their artwork at the Scholastic Art Show. This show is the premiere student art show in the state. Hannah Gierach (grade 9), an Art I student, earned a Gold Key for her pencil drawing. Shannon Kupfer (grade 12), an Art IV 2D student, earned a Gold Key for her Acrylic Painting. Stefan Lundgren (grade 9), an Art I student, earned a Silver Key for his pencil drawing. Steven Smith (grade 9), also an Art I student, earned a Silver Key for his pencil drawing. Jarrett Hazen (grade 11), an Art II 2D student, earned a Silver Key for his Metal Sculpture. Each students work will be on display at the Milwaukee Art Museum. Congratulations to both students and the art department.


    GHS Boys Soccer
    Congratulations to Coach Don Arnold and the Grafton Boys Soccer Team, who qualified for the WIAA State Division 2 Soccer Tournament for the second consecutive year.


    Girls State Cross Country Meet
    Congratulations to Ali Lorge, who participated in the WIAA State Division 2 Cross Country Meet. Ali's third place finish at the Milwaukee Lutheran Sectional, advanced her to the State Meet for the second year in a row.


    Ozaukee Bank Champion for Education Award
    Congratulations go out to Marcia Gorra-Patek, G.E.S. Art Teacher. Marcia's B.U.G.S. project at Grafton Elementary School has been selected as a recipient for the Ozaukee Bank Champion for Education Award. Grafton Elementary will receive a check for $1,000 to use for the B.U.G.S. project.


    Southeast Wisconsin Young Artist Conference
    Kennedy students Diego Poblete, Michael Rathke, Simon Wade, Madison Gingras, and Gabe Fritz were chosen to attend the Southeast Wisconsin Young Artist Conference "The Art of Writing" at the Milwaukee Art Museum. Grafton High School art student Krystal Altenbach also participated as a sketch artist. All of the students's work will be published this spring in a book titled "The Art of Writing."


    Girls State Swim and Dive Meet
    Congratulations to the Sadie Nenning and the Grafton Girls Swim Team, who took 7th place at the State Swim and Dive meet this year. Sadie took first place in the 100 yard backstroke and sixth in the 200 yard IM. Brittany Mason took fourth in the 1 meter dive, and Brianna Dietz took third in the 200 yard freestyle and fifth in the 500 yard freestyle. The girls also fielded teams in the 400 yard freestyle relay and the 200 yard medley relay. For more information visit the WIAA's results website.


    8th Grade Girls Basketball Team
    Congratulations to the 8th Grade Girls Basketball Team, who went 13-0 this season!



    Veterans Day Parade Essay Contest
    Congratulations to Hannah Weber, a fifth grade student at Grafton Elementary School, who was a third place winner in the Veterans Day Parade Essay Contest. Hannah will receive a $50 savings bond and a certificate of honor. She has also been invited to ride in a military vehicle in the Veterans Day Parade in Milwaukee on Saturday, November 10th.


    Wisconsin Association of School Boards Picture Book Contest
    Congratulations to G.E.S. second grader Abby Cibulka for being selected as a second place winner in the Wisconsin Association of School Boards write and illustrate your own picture book contest. Abbys book, Jimmy and the Dragon, was judged one of the best among more than 500 entries. As soon as Abby gets her book back we will be putting it on display in one of the glass display cases located in the main hallway.
